April 2010

The First Conference of Ministers responsible for Meteorology in Africa April 12-16, 2010 – Nairobi, Kenya - International Conference Center Weather, Climate and Water from a Development Perspective

The First Conference of Ministers Responsible for Meteorology in Africa will be held in Nairobi from 12 April to 16 April, at the invitation of the Government of Kenya. The first part of the Conference, from 12 to 14 April, will be a preparatory meeting of experts and partners of all sectors concerned, while the Conference of Ministers itself will take place on 15 and 16 April. The African continent is especially affected by changes in the climate. Already, the number and magnitude of natural hazards are increasing. All sectors of activity are concerned – in particular, agriculture and food security, transport, public health, water resources management, energy and tourism. To address those challenges, critical information must be generated and provided to decision-makers and users at all levels. The main purpose of the Conference is to recognize and contribute to strengthen the role and the contribution of the National Meteorological and Hydrological Services to government policies and initiatives for mitigating, and adapting to, the negative impacts of weather and climate. The Ministerial Conference is expected to endorse high level support to the expert-based Conference Statement from government representatives and to adopt a Conference Declaration for the development of weather, water and climate services in Africa.

AMS 90th Annual Meeting January 17–21, 2010, Atlanta, GA

The theme of the 2010 AMS Annual Meeting is “Weather, Climate, and Society: New Demands on Science and Services.” Recent international, national, and regional assessments, as well as recent observed trends, make it clear that the weather and climate of the twenty-first century is expected to be unlike the phenomena that the human and natural systems adapted to during the twentieth century. Currently, global societies lack the experience needed to mitigate projected climate change and weather extremes. Non-stationary (evolving) weather and climate present many scientific and service challenges. Increased predictive capabilities are becoming more critical for protecting life and property, promoting economic vitality, national defense, and enabling environmental stewardship. Weather and climate services, including communication with users of the data, data management, forecasts, projections, and education, are likely to play an increasingly important role in the development of socioeconomic and defense policy, industrial and military operations, and the motivation for the emergence of new economic opportunities.

An exhibition will take place concurrently with the Annual Meeting. We welcome visitors meet with us in the Main Hall:

Booth No. 136 Detect Inc. – Radar Wind Profiler and Avian Radar Systems
Booth No. 424 Enterprise Electronics Corporation – Doppler Weather Radars and Surface Weather Systems
Booth No. 241 Radiometrics Corporation – Temperature, Humidity and Liquid Water Radiometers Booth No. 237 Weather Decision Technologies, Inc. – Automated Nowcasting and Forecasting Systems & Services

The Republic Group Named Exporter of the Year by U.S. Export Promotion Magazine

The Republic Group (TRG) of Arlington, Va., has been awarded the 2007 ThinkGlobal/Commercial News USA Exporter of the Year award from ThinkGlobal Inc., publisher of Commercial News USA, the official export promotion magazine of the U.S. Commerce Department.Commercial News USA is a catalog-style magazine distributed to an estimated 400,000 readers in 176 countries worldwide. Awards are given to one U.S. company in each of 15 industry categories plus an Overall Exporter of the Year Award. Privately-held Republic was named Exporter of the Year in the Electrical/Electronic category and as the Overall Exporter of the Year for 2007.
Exporter of the Year 2007

Winners were chosen based on the total number of documented export deals completed in 2005, total percentage increase in sales in 2005 compared to 2004, exports as percentage of total sales, the company’s commitment to exporting, the company’s commitment to customer service, and the company’s innovation and originality in marketing products or services. To be eligible for the award, the company must currently be exporting from the United States.

TRG’s two core business units are its Environmental Systems Division and its Electronic Components Division, both of which pursue global market opportunities by utilizing an extensive network of in-country representatives and contacts. Today exports make up over 90% of TRG’s $35 million annual turnover.

Since its inception in 1958, The Republic Group has focused almost exclusively on the international marketplace. “For nearly 40 years now, we at TRG have considered the entire world as our ‘sandbox.’ We have always sought new trading opportunities in far away places—the farther the better. As times and customs changed, we have often needed to reinvent the way we do business overseas. We have always been a ‘gazelle’ company, gladly leaving the heavy lifting to the ‘big guys.’ That’s how we are able to stay one step ahead of them every time,” stated Mike Ueltzen who joined TRG in 1968 and became president and CEO in 1992. Gregory Sandler, publisher of Commercial News USA, said that The Republic Group’s success is indicative of how American companies can benefit from exporting. “With 95% of the world’s market outside the U.S., there is significant growth opportunity for American manufactures and service providers.” More information about the Exporter of the Year awards is available online at: www.exporteroftheyear.com
